The Lance Allrunner Memorial Scholarship

Lance Allrunner, (Cheyenne/Comanche/Kiowa) was a well-known, much-loved member of Denver’s Native community. Originally from Oklahoma, he grew up in the pow wow dance arena and was often invited to MC at pow wows across the country, including the Denver March Pow Wow.

Lance dedicated his life to sharing his knowledge of traditional customs with younger generations, always emphasizing the importance of education for Native youth. He was fun-loving and kind; easily developing rapport with children and other community members. He understood the challenges of “walking in two worlds” and with wisdom and patience mentored young people to succeed in life.

During his time in Denver, Lance assisted in developing and implementing youth programming for the Denver Public Schools. He advocated for Native youth involved with the juvenile justice system and during his time as a caseworker with Denver Indian Family Resource Center, assisted families involved with the child welfare system.  He also worked at Native American Cancer Research Inc.

Lance’s untimely death at the age of forty-two was a devastating loss to his family, the community and to the people whose lives were changed by his.  In honor of his life and generous heart, the Lance Allrunner Memorial Scholarship was established by the Medicine Heart Dancers, a dance troupe he founded for Native kids over twenty years ago.

To honor the memory of Lance Allrunner, the Medicine Heart Dancers present an annual scholarship for Native American students. This scholarship is intended to provide opportunity for students seeking higher education, one of Lance’s most passionate endeavors. Lance believed that we could preserve our heritage by educating our people. We share his vision for education and preservation of culture; and are honored to present this scholarship in his name.

Without the support from our many donors this opportunity would not be possible, and our organization is grateful for their generosity.

Your generosity provides a better quality of life for not only our students, but our people as a whole. Thank you for you kindness.
